CoQ10 and Blood Pressure
Hypertension (high blood pressure) affects more than 50 million people in the United States. It is also one of the most common factor which increases the risk for cardiovascular mortality and morbidity.
Coenzyme 10 (CoQ10) is a compound that is naturally found in the human body which helps convert the food we eat into energy. CoQ10 is found in every cell of a healthy body, and it is also a very powerful antioxidant.
Antioxidants are the ones responsible in fighting particles known as free radicals inside the body. These free radicals damage the cell membranes, interfere with the DNA and can even cause death of a cell. Scientists have proven that the free radicals can contribute into the aging process and to various kinds of health problems, such as cancer and heart diseases. Antioxidants like CoQ10 can neutralize these free radicals and may help reduce and prevent the cell damage.
Many scientists believe that CoQ10 can help with the heart-related problems, because this compound is able to improve the energy production in the cells, prevent formation of blood clots and acts as antioxidant.
Various clinical studies which involves a small number of people suggested how CoQ10 and blood pressure relate. The results have shown that CoQ10 can lower high blood pressure levels. However, it may take a number of days or a maximum of 12 weeks to see the results. In a scientific analysis, after reviewing 12 clinical experiments, the researchers have concluded that CoQ10 has the ability to lower systolic pressure down to 17 mmHg and he diastolic blood pressure to 10 mmHg, without any significant or adverse side effects. However, research with a big number of people is needed to see an effective result.
CoQ10 and blood pressure medications can work together to lower high blood pressure levels. A scientific study of people taking anti-hypertensive drugs while adding Coenzyme 10 supplements has been allowed to lower the doses of their medications. However, more research and results are needed to support this. If you are taking anti-hypertensive drugs, you must first talk with your physician before taking any CoQ10 and blood pressure supplement.
Don’t try treating high blood pressure just by yourself. Check first with your physician for the treatment.
