Registered Dietitian Melodie Yong talks about sodium and how it can impact your kidneys. Produced for the Province of BC by Global TV BC. Original airdate August, 1 2011.

Transcript:
Melodie Yong, registered dietitian: "We've been talking about sodium and its affect on the heart. What many people don't realize is that your sodium intake can also greatly affect your kidney function."

Dr. Monica Beaulieu: "Excess sodium causes your body to hold onto more water. This could lead to high blood pressure and to swelling. Over time, this can put a strain on the kidneys, sometimes leading to kidney damage and even kidney failure."

Melodie: "And if your kidneys are failing this can lead to dialysis and waiting for a kidney transplant."

Dr. Beaulieu: "Dialysis helps take over the function of the failed kidney if someone does go into kidney failure. It doesn't replace all the kidney function but it helps by taking care of some of the wastes and removing some of the fluid that the kidneys normally would do. Sodium's not the only cause of kidney failure but excess sodium is definitely a factor."

Melodie: "Reducing sodium is just one way to ensure your kidneys are able to do their job. You can learn more about sodium's affect on your kidneys and resources on how to reduce your sodium intake at HealthyFamiliesBC.ca "

Hypertension (i.e. high blood pressure) and Diabetes are two of the most common causes of kidney failure in North America. These conditions can cause irreversible damage to the kidneys over a long period of time, leading to what is known as Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Requested by Dr. Joan Krepinsky of the Hamilton Centre for Kidney Research (HCKR), this video offers the general public a glimpse into the mechanisms that are currently believed to be involved in these chain of events.

Learn more about signs of kidney problems by visiting .

You might not know much about your kidneys and what they do right now…so I'm going to tell you a few basic facts before I list some of the signs of kidney problems… As you can see from this video, your kidneys are two bean shaped organs that are located just a bit above your belt line on either side of your body…

Each kidney has thousands of tiny tissues called nephrons that filter waste materials, toxins and excess fluids from your bloodstream. These are flushed out of your body in the form of urine. urine.

Here's a list of the most typical signs of kidney problems that occur from a variety of possible disorders, which may include kidney stones, kidney infections, kidney cancer or kidney damage from some type of physical trauma, like a severe blow to the kidney area. These symptoms are also likely to show up if you have certain conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure.

Lower back pain is very often one of the first symptoms of kidney trouble. This back pain may be a mild, nagging ache, or it can be so severe it's actually debilitating.

Another common indicator of a kidney disorder is discomfort during urination and urine that is discolored and cloudy or even tinged with blood. Keep in mind, however, these symptoms are also typical of a bladder infection, so it's important to see your doctor for a diagnosis.

Most people with kidney trouble also find themselves heading for the bathroom more often than usual, even if little or no urine actually flows out. But this too can also just be a symptom of a bladder infection.

Signs of more serious kidney problems like impending kidney failure, a kidney infection or kidney cancer can include: changes in blood pressure, muscle weakness, anemia, lethargy and sleepiness, loss of appetite, cognitive difficulties, stomach discomfort,
general swelling, fever and chills, nausea and vomiting, breathlessness, night sweats,
increased heart rate and unexplained weight loss.

Signs of kidney problems shouldn't be ignored. When you experience one or more of the symptoms I've listed, consult your doctor as soon as you can.
